In this guide we will learn how to plant a tropical water lily tuber. *You should complete this planting without delay and you should work in a shaded location–live plants!
Tropical water lily tubers are vigorous. In one season you can grow several plants from a tuber!
- Gather the supplies. You will need a pot, substrate, fertilizer and a tropical water lily tuber. For this tutorial we are using an N. ‘Alexis’ tuber.
- Here we have a close up of the Alexis tuber.
- If this pot has holes–temporarily seal them with a water lily pad or newspaper.
- Next fill up the pot about 75% full with some substrate.
- Place some fertilizer on the substrate.
- Now top off the fertilizer with some more substrate.
- Place the tuber on the substrate laying it sideways. It is best to center the tuber and also place the side with more roots in contact with the soil.
- Top off the tuber with some substrate and place in pond.
You can grow a blooming plant from a tuber in about a month. Our location allows us on average a three week turnaround.
Tips for success
- You should place the pot in a very shallow section of your pond that receives the maximum amount of sun light and hence warmth.
- Do not allow other plants to crowd the tuber.
- After foliage reaches a size of a mini CD you can remove it and repeat the process for more plants.
